Workplace Neurodiversity Challenges: The Cancelled Meeting

For individuals with Autism and ADHD, the structure and predictability of a well-planned schedule are often the cornerstones of daily success. However, the inevitable reality of life, especially in a professional setting, is that things change – sometimes at the very last minute. Meetings get cancelled, plans are altered, and for those who thrive on routine, these sudden changes can be more than inconvenient; they can be genuinely disruptive.

As an autism and ADHD coach, I aim to equip my clients with practical tools and strategies to manage such unforeseen changes. I want to share some of these strategies, which have proven beneficial for individuals facing challenges due to last-minute meeting cancellations.


Embracing Structured Flexibility

 

Structured flexibility is at the heart of effectively managing unexpected changes. This involves having a plan but also being prepared to adapt when necessary. For individuals with autism and ADHD, this could mean maintaining a list of alternative activities that are both engaging and productive, which can be turned to when a meeting falls through. These activities should be enjoyable yet structured, providing a sense of accomplishment and maintaining the day's momentum.

 

Establishing a Robust Routine

 

A well-established routine can be a sanctuary for those with autism and ADHD. When incorporating routines, it's beneficial to include buffers for unexpected changes. By doing so, a last-minute cancellation doesn't entirely derail the day but becomes a part of the planned flexibility. This approach can reduce the anxiety associated with sudden changes.

 

Stress-Relief and Emotional Regulation

 

Sudden changes can often trigger stress or anxiety. Equipping individuals with stress-relief techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness practices, or even short walks, is crucial. Emotional regulation skills are equally important, as they help manage the feelings that arise from disruptions, enabling a more measured and less stressful response to changes.

 

Visual Aids for Planning

 

Visual schedules or calendars can be conducive. They allow individuals to see their day. When a meeting is cancelled, it's easier to reallocate that time to other activities visually. This not only aids in understanding the change but also in quickly adapting to it.

 

The Power of a Backup Plan

 

Having a 'Plan B' can significantly reduce the anxiety associated with potential cancellations. If a meeting is crucial, knowing there's an alternative plan in place can provide a sense of control and preparedness. Can there be an e-mail contact to ensure that significant issues that should have been addressed in the meeting are dealt with via e-mail?

 

Positive Reinforcement: Celebrating Adaptability


Responding adaptively to unexpected changes is a skill that can and should be reinforced positively. Recognizing and praising the ability to handle cancellations well can reinforce adaptive behaviours and boost confidence.

 

Role-Playing and Social Stories

 

For some, social stories or role-playing scenarios can be an effective way to prepare for handling cancellations. These tools can provide a safe way to explore feelings and strategies in a controlled environment, making it easier to deal with real-life situations when they arise.

 

Assertive Communication and Self-Advocacy

 

It's also essential to develop assertive communication skills. If frequent cancellations are problematic, individuals need to feel confident in expressing how this impacts them. Self-advocacy is a crucial skill, allowing individuals to express their needs and suggest alternatives that might work better for them.

 

In conclusion, while last-minute meeting cancellations can be challenging for individuals with autism and ADHD, these strategies can provide a framework for managing such disruptions. Tailoring these approaches to individual needs and preferences is critical, as is the continuous support and understanding from coaches, colleagues, and peers. With the right tools and strategies, navigating these challenges becomes not just possible but also a pathway to resilience and adaptability.


 

Neurodiversity is a vibrant tapestry that adds depth and colour to the human experience, reminding us that our brains work in wonderfully diverse ways. The essence of this concept lies not in urging those who are neurodiverse to conform or change to fit into a narrowly defined societal norm, but rather in championing the acceptance and understanding of these unique neurological makeups. It's about recognizing that neurodiversity is a natural and valuable form of human variation, and that the world should adapt to accommodate all kinds of minds.

While I have shared strategies to help those who are neurodiverse cope and manage within the current societal framework, it is crucial to acknowledge that the Neurodiverse movement is an ongoing journey towards broader societal change. This movement is not just about individual adaptation but about transforming our collective mindset and systems to be more inclusive and supportive of neurodiverse individuals. We can create a more empathetic and innovative society by fostering an environment where different thinking styles are acknowledged and celebrated.


This shift requires a collective effort to understand and embrace the differences in how we perceive, interact with, and process the world around us. The goal is not to devise ways for the neurodiverse to fit into the world as it is but to evolve our world to embrace all forms of neurodiversity. True progress lies in this ongoing dialogue and the continuous efforts to make our societies more accommodating and appreciative of the rich diversity of the human mind.
